Dear Spectrum Healthcare Professional:
Many of you are aware of the acronym that has invading our world, HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability Accountability Act). As a provider of medical services, Spectrum Healthcare Resources (Spectrum) must train and educate all employees on HIPAA regulations.
HIPAA privacy regulations impose new restrictions on the use of disclosure of protected health information by healthcare organizations and their employees. SHR has developed a corporate policy to ensure compliance with HIPAA’s new regulations. SHR’s policy applies to the behavior of all Spectrum employees where a function, activity or service is performed. Every individual is accountable for understanding and complying with this policy.
As an organization, we will be examining all the information we exchange to assure it is formatted to protect privacy. As individuals, we must consider whether or not the exchange is appropriate each time we are in a conversation, reviewing patient files or providing documentation.
The bottom line is that we, as an organization and as individuals, can be held liable for confidential, private medical information that we share with any individual who does not have a legitimate reason to have access to that information. Before you share any private information, written or verbal that could associate an individual with any past, current or future condition or illness, think twice!
The very heart of our business is the faith our clients have in Spectrum. We, as a company, and you and I, as individuals must do everything we can to ensure the privacy and confidentiality of each individual we encounter.
We are asking each employee to read through the HIPAA Policy and Acknowledgement form (above) and fax the acknowledgement form to 866.293.2688. Any questions regarding HIPAA should be forwarded to the Human Resource Department at 800.325.3982 or the Ethics Hotline at 888.315.2362.
